Sociocultural factors: their relation with academic performance of compulsory secondary school students
Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship of socio cultural factors on academic performance among students in Secondary Education (ESO) in the city of Badajoz (Spain). In order to do so, a total sample of 1,197 ESO students (49.9% male and 50.1% female) was taken. They participated individually and without help, and answered a questionnaire with personal and family questions which analysed some variables related to these two main topics. Moreover, the final score of all subjects studied during that school year was included. Gender, type of institution, course studied, family structure, family economic status and cultural differences are highly significant (p≤.001).The student profile with a high overall academic performance corresponds to students from private schools, female, from an extended family with a high cultural and economic level.
