Abstract

In this empirical study an instrument for diagnosing the perception of emotional competences in first year university students (n = 571) studying any of the degree programmes in the School of Education at the University of La Coruña (Spain) is validated. The instrument is a Likert scale of 4 points. The levels of internal reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = .765) and the validity of the constructo (KMO= .0758) are quite acceptable.Depending on the results of factor analysis, a model of 10 factors are proposed explaining almost 60% of the information. Subsequently, multiple regression analyses are carried out to reduce this model to 5predictors (60, 7% of the explanation of the dependent variable). Finally, we applied a discriminant analysis to establish the differentiating capability of factors (M of Box =307,102 and p= .001).
