The Teaching–Learning Process of University Students with Disabilities
Abstract
Higher education has made significant progress in addressing the needs of students with disabilities and/or specific educational support requirements, driven by recent regulatory and social developments, although significant challenges remain. The aim of this study is to examine university lecturers’ perceptions of the educational response provided to these students throughout the teaching–learning process. A qualitative research design was adopted, drawing on semi‑structured interviews, as the primary data collection method. The study involved twenty lecturers from the Faculties of Education at the three universities located in the Autonomous Community of Galicia. Findings reveal a strong commitment among lecturers to adapt instructional materials, classroom activities, and assessment practices to the characteristics and needs of these students, as well as a positive disposition towards improving their pedagogical response. However, the results also highlight persistent shortcomings in teacher training that hinder the implementation of more comprehensive and systemic adaptations. The discussion underscores the need to advance towards practices informed by Universal Design for Learning and to strengthen professional development initiatives so as to ensure educational responses that are coherently aligned with the diversity of students.
