En la versión que las distintas fuentes historiográficas ofrecen de Valentiniano I hay un aspecto que, a nuestro juicio, ha pasado poco más que inadvertido para la crítica y, aunque aparentemente superficial, constituye un punto de arranque para comprender su figura, compararla con otra, y justificar actuaciones de dicho emperador cuyo móvil se presentaba oscuro y, de hecho, representa todavía un problema abierto a nuevas indagaciones.
