Abstract
In this paper, we shall analyse the decreasing power of the Senate along the III Century A.C. This is interpreted as an institutional phenomenon that foreshadows the changes in the Tetrarchy, in a time when the Late Antiquity is already emerging and the political organisation of the High Empire starts to fade away. We shall briefly deal with the Emperors in power during this period and their attitude towards the Senate. We shall also look at the evolution of this institution and its impact both on the Roman society and on the development of Roman magistratures. These had to face the emergence of the «new men», people with a rural origin that gradually took over political matters, thus pushing the army noblemen into the background.
