Abstract

The sources mention the existence on the Syrian Upper Euphates, between Qalcat NaYm and the actual Turkish frontier, that is, a stretch of barely 40 kilometers, of a series of cities in the Roman period: Hierápolis, Caeciliana, Europos. And the recent discovery of important funerary complexes of that period indicate that the density of the urban population in these was even greater than that suggested in the texts. A group of necropolis are documented, most of these along the river banks.
