Abstract

In this paper we analyse the actions undertaken by the Severan Dinasty in general and, more specifi cally, by Septimius Severus, in order to legitimize the seizure of power and their subsequent rule. This was accomplished by a brilliant use of propaganda, both in Rome and in the provinces, that included taking the name of Pértinax, the fake adoption by the Antonines and even the use of language related to urban architecture and figurative arts to uphold and improve the image of the first Severan monarchs.
