Abstract

More and more often, public and private universities promote the use of free software in the university community and in the society in general. Universities, as a fundamental key of a modern society, should encourage the socialization of the knowledge, permitting higher access by means of the Internet and, simultaneously, respecting authors’ rights. This paper analyzes the characteristics of free software and the legal framework that regulates its use at the universities; after that, the work focuses on the experiences of some Catalan universities promoting and using it.
