Abstract

In the 12th and 13Ih centuries the military architecture in Syria adquires special relevance, above al1 in those places related to the comercial routes and the frontiers. In this paper a study is made of these castles and their immediate surroundings where there is an outstanding mosque-monastery. The complex is believed to be a ribat, understanding as such a fortified spot, shelter and caravan refuge, and a place where the pious gathered together to defend an Islarnic frontier.
