Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analize the causes by which some strategies of manual exploration facilitate the acquisition of information about certain object properties. The available evidence shows that substantial properties are more salient, easier to obtain and integrate than the spatial properties, the former playing a fundamental role in the everyday use of the haptic sense. The main implications of these results for the understanding of blind people tactual perception and their consequences for the active vs pasive touch issue are also evaluated.
