New edition and reading of CLE 614
Abstract
The preservation of the funerary plaque from Upper Germany corresponding to CLE 614, found in the church of San Gereon in Cologne, has led to variations in the reading of some of its parts and has generated controversy about its possible Christian nature. Therefore, the aim of this work is to clarify the doubts about its Christian nature, but also to offer a new critical edition of its complete text, based on direct observation of the piece and previous editions of it. This new reading has allowed for a better interpretation of the text, consisting of six dactylic hexameters, in which certain terms and poetic devices typical of Latin epigraphy in verse stand out, and focused on presenting a lamentatio for the death of Optata, the young deceased.
