Abstract

An analysis is made of the changes that take place in the heavy cavalry from the first millenium BC up to the last centuries of the Westem Empire and beginnings of the Byzantine period. Its origin in the East and the role played by the wars in Eastem Europe for the adaptation of these tactics in the Roman army after the first century AC. It is after the third century AD when the corps of horsemen armed with heavy armour began to develop. An analysis is made of the testimonies of the later sources and finishes with the presentation of the testimony of Claudiano.
