BEHAVIORAL TREATMENT OF A ELECTIVE MUTISM CASE

Abstract

We present a case of elective mutism of a 14-year-old mildly mentally retarded boy. The treatment was carried out in two phases, in two and five weeks respectively, and it was composed of group relaxation, in vivo desensitization, and token economy. Results indicated that the subject emited more than twenty verbal responses an hour; on the other hand, the length of his verbal responses increased from two to more than hundred words. The length and the frecuency of the behavior of too. These positive results were remained in a follow-up carried out after six months. The efficacy and the efficiency of the treatment is discussed.
