Abstract

It is well known that most of the research on agriculture is carried out in developed countries. However, it is necessary to identify to what extent Latin America and the Caribbean countries are contributing to the mainstream research output. Therefore, we attempted a bibliometric analysis in order to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the region. Science Citation Index Expanded, for the period 1995-2002, was used as source of data. We retrieved papers published in indexed journals in the following six categories: Agricultural Economics & Policy; Agricultural Engineering; Dairy & Animal Science; Agriculture, Multidisciplinary; Soil Science; and Agronomy. Also, papers that were cited as well as the number of citations attracted. The most productive disciplines were: Dairy & Animal Science
