Abstract

The discovery of the “pill” brought about major changes in modern life. We therefore carried out a bibliometric analysis focusing on Latin America and Caribbean countries since they played an important role in the discovery and development of oral contraceptives. The number of papers retrieved from medical (Medline) and demographic databases (Popline) was scarce (N=124) being Mexico and Brasil the most productive countries. However, they show that the negative effects of the “pill” have been minimal. It was also identified that the “pill” has been tested mainly on rural and semi-urban populations, usually with a lower level of education. Most of these results were published in foreign journals
