The Use and Consumption of ICTs in Native and Foreign Students of Secondary Compulsory Education in the Region of Murcia

Abstract

This article aims to show the results of a piece of research about the use and the interaction of ICTs on the part of Compulsory Secondary Education students in the Region of Murcia2. It aims to know which technological equipment students have at home and how they use the Internet, Social Networks, mobile phones, videogame consoles, and TV during their study and free time and in their personal relationships. They main point in all this is to foster a form of education oriented at a safe and healthy use and consumption of digital media; and to study the possible types of digital data breach that may occur. A total of 2734 Compulsory Secondary Education students from 15 schools (3rd and 4th years) took part in this piece of research. 528 were of a foreign origin and they responded to a 73 item questionnaire which analyzed the above-mentioned dimensions. In the conclusions the different consumption profiles are discussed in relation to student origin and social background. The results obtained lead to significant reflections such as the possibilities that digital media give people to interact with each other, which enforces the principles of equity and equality of opportunity in the access to information and knowledge.
