Abstract

This essay represents an attempt to stop the drift of the modern images of evil in accordance with the stereotypes that art and education have been fixing in the collective bourgeois imaginary. The article tries to show a progressive desubstantialization of such figures, as they steer towards the comic and the grotesque, whilst, at the same time, and precisely because of that, a feeling of horror and anguish, in response to an oscillation against which the standard citizen does not literally know what to expect, increases. In this outline of a logic of excess, the 19th century figures of the criminal, the phantom, and the satanic are analyzed. These will then return in the so called postmodernity as terrorism, drugaddition and transvestism.
