Abstract

This article reconstructs the main times and ideas of the critical encounter of the pragmatic movement with the european philosophy, from the later XIX century to the rortyan neopragmatism in the later XX. In between the article sets the historical position and the theoretical core of neopragmatism, and ends pointing at the common direction of the critical trends to it. The line of argument is suported by the pragmatic explanation of language and meaning, and by its ethical, political and democratic value, which puts pragmatism and neopragmatism to a continuous strain with the epistemological oriented philosophy.
