Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine how Organismic Integration Theory is expressed in the pre- and post-match press conferences of professional football coaches, using a Mixed Methods approach grounded in Observational Methodology. An ad hoc observational instrument was developed, integrating three mini-theories of Self-Determination Theory—Basic Psychological Needs, Causal Orientations, and Organismic Integration—together with Nicholls’ Achievement Goal Theory. The sample consisted of 53 press conferences from 13 informants, including 11 First Division coaches, one club president, and one sporting director. Press conferences from the top three and bottom three teams in the league standings were analyzed for matchdays 15 to 19 and 34 to 38 of the 2023–2024 season. The results show a predominance of extrinsic regulation in coaches’ discourse, regardless of match outcome, reflecting the highly competitive pressure and the constant demand to achieve results. This form of regulation appears associated with both the satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs. Additionally, the findings indicate that match outcomes shape the type of motivation expressed: intrinsic motivation emerges only in winning contexts, whereas less self-determined forms of motivation are more frequent after defeats or in situations of greater pressure.
