THE ANTIOQUIA CRISIS OF THE YEAR 354: AN EXAMPLE OF THE SURVIVAL OF THE "VIS PUBLICA" IN LATE ANTIQUITY
Abstract
Analysis of the crisis at Antiochia in the year 354, as a result of popular violence in the Eastern area of the Empire. It is shown that there are still some foci of civic disturbance, that these could mobilize people with low or nonexistent resources in telation to food supply in big cities. The «parainstitutional» function still performed by the vox populi in the political of the Later Roman Empire is also shown. This study analyses the vis publica, restricted to the context of Antiochia, and shows that it was not always due to specific material circumstances such as farnine, taxes, social or economic oppresion, etc., but that it was sometimes a kind of violence by means of which poor people in general (plebeii and humiliores) exerted their natural rights against rulers when they considered they had not protected the basic needs of the population.
