La excomunión o sanción religiosa para aquellos que se apartaban de las normas y dogmas cristianos, se transformó en el mundo visigodo, debido a los castigos y limitaciones que conllevaba y a la fuerza de ley que adquirió a través de los Concilios, en un instrumento de coerción política dentro del juego constante de luchas partidistas que caracterizaron su historia a partir de Recaredo.
