La existencia del monacato en la España romana, como un estado bien diferenciado del simple ascetismo y bastante difundido, está probada por testimonios de sobra elocuentes. Baste recordar el canon sexto del Concilio de Zaragoza, el año 380, con su expresión legis monachum; y entre los años 384 y 389 la carta del papa Siricio a Himerio, el metropolitano de Tarragona, en la cual se dice a monasteriorum coetu.
