Obispos exiliados y confinados en monasterios en época protobizantina
Abstract
It is well known that one of the usual judicial practices during the Later Roman Empire and first Byzantine Epoch were the diverse form of «
exilium», amongst which are found the confinement in monasteries. It is also known that a large number of the bishops suffered personally and for long periods these practices.
After a through lecture of the documents it is seen that the bishops who deserve to be exiled are guilty of a wide variety of crimes or of having attitudes contrary to the normal. Some are accused directly on indirectly of moral conduct improper of their office, others because they are evidently opposed to the Christian doctrine defended by the Emperor. And lastly, others because they are the real instigators of social conflicts with deep political-religious meanings.
