Abstract

During the past few years, the international scene has shown a renewed interest in
attending the educational needs of talented or gifted students. Such students are
often erroneously thought to make progress on their own, and attemps to attend
their diversity are even regarded as élitism. Spain is entering this line of thought,
this trend being the challenge of the education reform. This essay intends to study
in depth several points of this field which are significant because they relate to still
stereotyped dimensions and have considerable impact in real education, namely
characteristics of the talented ans of the extremely gifted; prevalence of high
capacity; education, giftedness and gender; giftedness and school failure; and
attention to the gifted in Spain's educational system.
