Abstract

A process of national identity development took place in schools during a period of national Catholicism and was reflected in school exercise books that pupils completed in their daily activities. School exercise books have thus kept all integration elements that allowed schools to develop a concept of national identity. School exercise books show that national identity was a cognitive and emotional issue which schools had to foster, and that it was created from the interaction of pupils in a context dominated, on the one hand, by factors such as personal and group self-esteem related to the concept of “Spain”, and on the other, by feelings and emotions aroused by the Regime Franco among young people.
