Integrating Social Networks and Virtual Learning Environments

Abstract

In this article a new learning model based on social networks integrated in a Moodle environment is presented. Social network concept is the base for informal learning to be part of a formal course. The proposed model has two formats, the first one allows students to freely add comments in a course, the second allows students to discuss about the content provided by teachers, and both discussion and interaction is strengthened through the dialogue’s typical functions in a network. The model is summarized in a tool that integrates traditional concepts (Moodle) and emerging social networks and web 2.0 resources with a systemic approach that involves to student in a methodology that takes advantage of informal learning in a formal setting.
