Abstract

Beside historians and journalists, filmmakers have also tried to offer a valid and valuable perspective about historical facts. The most extreme episodes of political violence, including genocide and terrorism, have been brought into movies with different success. This article attempts to analyse some of the most recent films. On one hand, it addresses the ethical debate about possible or real effects of portraying political violence, specially the risk of spectacularization and aesthetization of violence, cruelty and pain in artistic images. On the other hand, the paper reflects on the possibility of a sentimental education through art, the power of art to tackle the unspeakable, and to acknowledge and drive to recognition of the pain inflicted to victims.
