Socioecological and Gender Factors Associated with Extracurricular Physical Activity among Mexican Students: A Multinomial Analysis

Abstract

Physical inactivity is an increasingly prevalent public health concern during childhood and adolescence. Physical activity among family members and peers, gender differences, and characteristics of the school environment may be associated with regular participation. This study aimed to describe perceived physical activity among caregivers and peers, the frequency of extracurricular physical activity within and outside school, and perceptions of school safety and belonging; examine gender differences; and identify factors associated with the frequency of participation at school after classes. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, associative study was conducted using a questionnaire administered to 803 Mexican students in the fifth and sixth grades of primary

education. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed, followed by multinomial logistic regression using 770 complete cases. Overall, 43.1% did not participate in extracurricular physical activity at school after classes, whereas 28.5% did not participate outside school. Girls participated less frequently than boys. Gender, the number of physically active friends, and academic self-assessment contributed significantly to the overall model fit; school belonging showed a specific association with participation more than three times per week. The model had modest explanatory capacity (Nagelkerke R² = .132). These findings support gender-sensitive extracurricular programmes that facilitate the participation of students with less active peer networks and promote school connectedness.
