Digital hate victims: hate speech on social media analysis from a socioeducational perspective
Abstract
This paper analyses the psychological, emotional, and social impact of racist hate speech on social media from the perspective of victims. Through qualitative interviews with affected individuals and expert professionals, the study examines the effects of hate messages on social media on self-esteem, mental health, and the exercise of digital citizenship. The main objective is to understand the psychological, emotional, and social consequences that this type of digital violence generates in those affected, as well as to explore the strategies they employ to cope with it and their perception of the effectiveness of the measures offered by digital platforms. The research is based on semi-structured interviews with both victims and professionals who are experts in the field. Through a socio-educational approach, the study aims to delve into aspects such as the perception of digital security, mental health, the exercise of digital citizenship, digital competence, and the assessment of the moderation policies and tools implemented by platforms. This paper offers a comprehensive view of the digital dynamics of hate that affect and increase factors of exclusion, vulnerability, and resistance in both the digital and educational and community environments, with the goal of providing informed proposals for the prevention, intervention, and improvement of virtual environments and coexistence processes.
