Determinantes del progreso en los estudios de doctorado. Diferencias entre disciplinas científico-tecnológicas versus ciencias sociales y humanidades
Abstract
Problems in doctoral education, especially with respect to completion rates, have emerged in many countries, including Spain. This study was designed to identify the factors associated with the progress to the doctoral degree and the ellaboration of doctoral dissertations in two disciplinary groups: hard sciences and technology versus humanities and social sciences.
This paper presents information from a questionnaire completed by 81 doctoral students in the University of Girona, attending three main areas of inquiry: economic, personal and academic variables conditioning outcomes.
Results show substantial differences between disciplines. The most important factors accounting for the differences are: professional involvement in the university, planning of the doctoral research project and personal goals.
Some considerations for enhancing doctoral education are given.
