Abstract

In order to achieve educational goals at the highest level, current teaching demands comprehensive training of students, that is, both intellectual and affective-emotional.  The relationship between the emotional competence and the academic achievement of university Mexican students was investigated in this study. The Trait Meta-Mood Sacale (TMMS-24), the Social Abilities Scale (EHS) and the final grade point average were used. 101 students from the pre-medicine program participated in this study (51% men and 49% women) between 17 and 22 years of age (mean= 18.81, SD=1.2). Results show adequate levels in students’ emotional perception and understanding but not in their emotional regulation. A significant negative correlation between academic achievement and social interactions was found. The importance of developing students’ emotional competencies that contribute to their well-being and emotional balance is emphasized.
