La poderosa estirpe de los Alkmeónidas tiene una importancia primordial en la historia de Atenas. Es conocida su lucha contra Pisístrato y sus sucesores. Clístenes. uno de sus miembros más ilustres sentó las bases de la democracia, la cual llegará a su máximo esplendor de la mane de otro alkmeónida: Pericles.
