Topographic description in travel writing: the risk of arbitrary reconstruction of spaces
Abstract
Topography, as far as travel writing is concerned, is a figure of speech that, besides being descriptive, provides verisimilitude. This is extremely important as we know that travelogues are not shielded by a fictional pact between authors and readers. However, verisimilitude is not always a synonym for veracity. By analyzing several landscape descriptions in travel writing, this paper attempts at exploring how topography can eventually lead to an arbitrary reconstruction of spaces.
