Abstract

In his Cartas desde mi celda, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer included a narration which could be classifi ed as fantastic and of terror. Directly related with the world of witches and witchcraft, attached to the most immediate reality, it is a faithful mirror of the superstitions and customs he refl ects. Collector of local traditions, within the purest European Romanticism trend, he recreated stories or tales of popular origin, in this case surrounding the witches. He combined the taste for traditions, superstitions, beliefs and popular tales with the caution of the educated towards these traditions. He wants to transmit them to his readers, looking after the truth and authenticity of the quoted testimonies, in order to strengthen the interest of those who followed his articles in El Contemporáneo.
