Collection sets of cases: a valuable teaching tool in Clinical Pathology
Abstract
Clinical Pathology is the medical specialty in which clinical diagnosis are obtained through the histological study of biological tissue samples. The microscopy slides that have been used during the clinical workflow can be retrieved and revised with educational purposes. This possibility allows for the creation of “collection sets of cases'' that can be used as a teaching tool for residents and other Pathology learners. These collections sets of cases can be defined as “closed sets of cases that have been selected based on their pedagogical interest” and facilitate the task of becoming familiar with some pathological entities or other histological characteristics. In this narrative review, we described these collections of cases, their typology, possible uses, strengths and weaknesses; furthermore, we discuss the impact that the digitalization of Clinical Pathology services is having on the elaboration of these collections.
