Abstract

Kantian approach to a natural history applied to the man, related to a physiological anthropology, depends on the discussion, often controversial, that Kant maintained with Herder, Forster and Blumenbach. The article tries to contribute to the exhibition of the long reach that the preformationist and epigenetical currents of generation theory have for the critical philosophy. The paper sets out firstly to define the aspects of the eighteenth-century embryology that Kant considers useful for the transcendental philosophy. Secondly, it sets out to develop the thesis of the French scholar G. Lebrun, according to which the kantian writings on the races belong to a wider project which aims to set free a purpose meaning not determined by the model of the craftsman or the demiurge.
