Abstract

This paper begins with a description of how political obligation is justified through citizenʼs consensus in Rousseau and Rawlsʼ contractual theories. In the second part, it takes for granted the critique that Rawls makes of his own theory, to later demonstrate that Political Liberalismʼs solution does not represent any significant improvement with respect to A Theory of Justice. Finally, an alternative version of political obligation is developed, which underlies the contractual thinking of both authors highlighting an objective relationship between particular wills and the general will (or between citizensʼ conceptions of their good and the principles of justice).
