Abstract

The article presents a discussion on which the place of belief (fides) in Boethius’s hypothetical syllogistic is (De syllogismis hypotheticis). It proposes that belief incorporates to the theory without modifying it or transforming it into a dialectic or any other informal theory. It discusses whether the matter of propositions is the doctrine allowing to include belief in hypothetic logic, and if it is possible that this way of understanding a logical theory that Boethius reports comes from Theophrastus and the first Peripatetic school.
