Abstract

Since the advent of the internet, Public Administrations have set up new ways in which to manage their information through their Web portals. These portals are part of an information system in which information is made available both internally (back-office) and externally (front-office). They have also meant that a new field has opened up for information professionals to work in and for academics to study.

The present communication is a synthesis of an extensive doctoral thesis presented in 2012 that analysed in detail the internet services of the Web portals of the councils of Portugal's 308 municipalities. In particular, these services were those of information, communication, and transactions applied to three areas: everyday life, distance administration, and political participation.
