Abstract

'Institutional propaganda and wastepaper basket literature'. This paper deals with the linguistic analysis of some institutional propaganda by the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Catalonian autonomous Government, specifically the slogans of the campaigns from 1999, "Catalonian, a country that grows", and that of 1987, "We are six millions". Catalonia is a Mediterranean country in the northeast of Spain, with a population of six million of people and its main city is Barcelona. The aim of the study is to expose the features of the wastepaper basket literature -opposed to the bookshop literature and the grey literature-, to show how well works the strategy of the homage and, finally, to evaluate the features of that political advertising according to the gender of basket literature. The article casts doubts over the idea of the public interest of some institutional propaganda.
