Influence of Social Media Use on Sleep, Academic Performance, and Physical Activity in Secondary School Students
Abstract
This study examines the impact of social media use on sleep quality, academic performance, and physical activity in 3ºESO students at a high school in Caravaca de la Cruz, Murcia. The relationships between the use of various social media platforms and these factors were evaluated. The results revealed moderate and significant negative correlations between intensive use of Instagram, TikTok, and BeReal, and both sleep quality and academic performance. Students who used these social networks more frequently showed a higher likelihood of experiencing sleep problems and lower academic performance compared to those who limited their use. The conclusions highlight the importance of taking steps to manage excessive social media use during adolescence. This includes not only raising awareness of its adverse effects but also developing educational programs and family strategies that foster more conscious and balanced use. Promoting healthy digital habits mitigate the negative impact on sleep and academic performance.
