Abstract

Doctoral education plays a fundamental role in the process of Open Science expansion. As a means to achieve this deployment, doctoral training incorporates the use of ICT in research and open access as the basis for the establishment of open science. The International Doctoral School of the University of Murcia (EIDUM) provides training focused on the acquisition of scientific and research skills associated with the use of ICT for the development of doctoral theses. This qualitative study makes visible and analyzes the responses and appreciations of twenty-nine coordinators on the different elements of the training developed in their programs. The EIDUM has thirty-six doctoral programs structured in four branches of knowledge (arts, sciences, health and social sciences). Semi-structured interviews are carried out as an instrument to identify the significant contributions of the training activities enriched with technologies used in the different moments of the research process. In the analysis, the coding and categorization of the thematic content of the data is developed through the Atlas.ti program. The results are structured according to four macro categories (1. Doctoral training plan, 2. Competency-based teaching, 3. Personalized teaching, 4. Coordinator's contribution) together with their interrelated subcategories, which represent the main aspects of doctoral education. In conclusion, the coordinators value positively the use of technologies in the competency-based training of doctoral students and consider necessary the implementation of the virtual modality in the training activities of the EIDUM in order to promote mobility and internationalization.
