Abstract

My main concern in this article has been to show how Cernuda’s “idealismo instintivo” –in his own words– contains a twofold aspect corresponding to two different parts of his life: his youth in Seville and his adult life as a refugee, first in UK and later in the US and Mexico. The study of how he treats the topics of God, his homeland and love may throw a new light on his logics of desire: the sequence enthusiasm-disappointment in the poet’s relationship with outer reality suggests an underlying conflict between idea and experience that can be grasped within the boundaries of an idealistic framework.
