Inter-Species Entaglements and Aesthetic Knowledge in the work of Jonathas de Andrade (Brazil Pavilion, 59th Venice Biennale, 2022)

Abstract

In this essay, I would like to propose that Jonathas de Andrade's exhibition “Com o coração saindo pela boca” (Brazil Pavilion, 59th Venice Biennale, 2022) questions the epistemological apparatus of modernity and tells us that there is something about climate change that can only be expressed with the body; with a dismembered and partial body that takes us back to the most basic, to the senses and vital functions: beating, breathing, touching, tasting, smelling, looking, hearing. The expressions that make up the work and take it beyond the visual to poetry, convey the physical sensation of expression rather than its figurative meaning and, therefore, speak to us of the need to rely on a type of knowledge that goes beyond—or closer to—the symbolic; beyond reason and the idea of the modern, self-sovereign subject. A knowledge that—considering the etymology of the word aisthesis as ‘faculty of sensory perception’—could be called aesthetic knowledge.
