A lump in one's Throat. Language, Body and Aesthetic Knowledge in the Work of Jonathas de Andrade (Brazilian PaVilion, 59th Venice Biennale, 2022)
Abstract
This essay argues that Jonathas de Andrade’s exhibition Com o coração saindo pela boca (Brazilian Pavilion, 59th Venice Biennale, 2022) challenges the modern epistemological apparatus as a tool for addressing the Anthropocene. Through expressions drawn from popular language that link body and word and shift the installation toward poetry, the work suggests that the new climatic regime can be named only through the body and its functions: beating, breathing, touching, tasting, smelling, seeing, and hearing. The installation and the video Nó na garganta propose a form of knowledge –an “episte-mo-aesthetic”– inseparable from the body and the planet.
