Abstract

Animals populate many pages of travel stories, naturalist reports, and, of course, fiction in Latin American literature. In an era that seeks to question the "humanist" conception inherited from the Renaissance, it is interesting to examine the attitudes and uses of animals that are present in 21st-century Spanish-language literature. In this article, we will do so from the perspective of avant-garde writing that is grounded in primitivist elements: we refer to the work of Pablo Katchadjian, and specifically to The Horse and the Gaucho, a series of short texts that present seemingly archaic settings close to—and in dialogue with—nature.
