Ethics of Care and the Postcolonial Novel: Two Readings through Care
Español
Abstract
This book seeks to make visible forms of structural or historical violence, such as colonialism, from an affective perspective. The ethics of care, in this sense, involves shifting the focus from abstract frameworks of political or legal analysis to the lived, emotional, and relational experiences of those affected by this violence. To this end, Alonso Breto proposes a methodology called “careful reading,” a term coined by the American philosopher and psychologist Carol Gilligan (1982). Breto adopts this concept and draws heavily on the work of the American political scientist Joan Tronto, whose books and scholarly articles form the core of his critical perspective on the ethics of care. Here, Breto explores the intersection between the ethics of care and postcolonial literature in English.
