On Don Mariano

Abstract

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the creation of the “Mariano Baquero Goyanes” Secondary School, its leaders sent me to make a portrait of the former professor at the University of Murcia, an illustrious researcher and exemplary citizen, after whom this educational center is named. Its director was explicit when requesting me: we would like to know first-hand who Don Mariano was. Of course they know who he is, but no doubt they wanted to hear it from one of his disciples. It is not uncommon to be in centers whose name becomes something as commonplace as it is unknown. And that is what we are going to try to solve. I will begin without further ado by stating that Don Mariano means honesty, wisdom, rigor, loyalty, decency, all of them adjectives that describe so well a person devotedly dedicated to education and research. I don't know what would be of this country, and of its always controversial teaching, if it had enjoyed teachers as lucid and competent as he was for decades.
