Abstract

The symbolism serves as a link between the real and the supernatural, and the profusion of supernatural events, horrible pictures, strange scenes constitutes one of the most surprising characteristics in the creation narrative of Barbey d’Aurevilly. The images, metaphors, symbols, the many parallelisms..., related to the animal world, are repeated insistently; an universe that emphasizes the savagery of the characters, giving to the lowest instincts of the animal species. But through procedures of dissimulation, the brutality is concealed, and it is true that felines, reptiles, horses, rapacious animals... they are numerous and they occupy a prominent place in the work.
