Abstract

This study aims to highlight the fact that, at the time of the expulsion (1609), Moorish converts to Christianity (moriscos), or at least some of them who were fairly learned, were already integrated into Spanish culture, even if they had not fully assimilated into it, as Muhamad Rabadán, a Moorish poet from Aragon, seems to suggest. His work proves that he read the Spanish classics of the time and that he knew their literature, for it shows a good command of the Spanish language together with metrical and expressive means. In any case, an outstanding feature in Rabadán’s work is the Hispanic vocabulary characteristic of the Moorish literature written in Arabic characters (aljamiada).
