Abstract

The religious question occupies a central place in the political confrontation of the Republic II. In this context, the celebration of the Holy Week was one more scene of the lived tension. The festivity seemed to offer a moment of social integration, though actually it was a mirage. The commemoration divided the society, and it was necessary to blur his content with civil acts. Nonetheless, they could not conceal the different interests in game, anticipation —with other weapon— from the dramatic clash of July, 1936. The city of Cartagena favours the confl ict annotated to tenor of the protagonists in presence: from an educated and liberal middle class to a military hierarchy positioned opposite to the republican regime and a widespread proletariat goaded by the serious economic crisis of the 30s.
